A grain mill adds control over freshness and crush consistency. Roller alignment and repeatable gap adjustment matter more than an oversized hopper.

Buy the complete workflow, not the most impressive isolated component. Missing adapters, seals, power requirements and cleaning access are part of the real price.

Crush quality affects the entire brew day

Too coarse can reduce extraction; too fine can complicate lautering. A mill should hold a repeatable gap and feed grain evenly. Marking a setting is useful only when the rollers remain aligned.

Two-roller versus more elaborate designs

Simple two-roller mills handle most homebrew use. Additional rollers may improve control but add cost and complexity. Evaluate build quality, bearing design and serviceability before counting rollers.

Powering the mill

Hand cranks are inexpensive and reliable. Drill or motor drive requires correct speed, secure mounting and guarded moving parts. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions rather than improvising high-speed drive systems.

Used mill inspection

Rotate the rollers by hand, check for flat spots or wobble, inspect adjustment hardware and look for rust in the grain path. Missing hopper panels and crank hardware can erase a bargain price.

A practical inspection checklist

• Confirm capacity, dimensions, model number and included parts.
• Photograph labels, plugs, fittings, valves and sealing surfaces.
• Price missing or questionable components before buying.
• Compare delivered cost against completed sales.
• Replace unknown tubing, worn seals and damaged food-contact parts.
