Kegging is a system, not a single purchase. Keg type, disconnects, regulator outlets, tubing, fittings, refrigeration and serving hardware must work together.
Buy the complete workflow, not the most impressive isolated component. Missing adapters, seals, power requirements and cleaning access are part of the real price.
Map gas and liquid paths
Draw the cylinder, primary regulator, optional manifold, keg gas post, beverage dip tube, liquid disconnect, line and faucet. Every connection needs the correct thread or barb size.
Ball-lock and pin-lock are different ecosystems
Both can work well, but posts and disconnects differ. Standardizing one type simplifies spares and reduces accidental mismatches. Seller listings sometimes use “Corny keg” without clearly identifying the connection type.
Refrigeration is a major part of cost
A complete keg setup may require a refrigerator or freezer, temperature control, shanks, faucets and drilling hardware. Compare a full used kegerator against a pieced-together system using completed sales.
Used kegging equipment can be strong value
Stainless kegs, quality regulators and faucets can last for years. Replace old beverage line, gas line, O-rings and questionable seals. Pressure equipment should be inspected and used within manufacturer specifications.
A practical inspection checklist
- Confirm capacity, dimensions, model number and included parts.
- Photograph labels, plugs, fittings, valves and sealing surfaces.
- Price missing or questionable components before buying.
- Compare delivered cost against completed sales.
- Replace unknown tubing, worn seals and damaged food-contact parts.
