The best wort chiller is the one you can clean confidently and operate with your available water pressure, pump setup and batch volume.

Immersion chillers are easy to inspect

Copper or stainless coils sit in the kettle while cooling water passes through. They have simple internal water paths and keep wort outside the tubing, which makes sanitation straightforward.

Counterflow and plate chillers need process discipline

These designs can cool quickly but move wort through internal passages. Filtering, flushing and cleaning procedures matter. Buyers should understand how the seller cleaned a used unit and whether internal fouling can be verified.

Size the chiller to climate and water

Warm tap water limits final cooling temperature. Coil length, plate area, flow rate and agitation affect performance. A more expensive chiller does not overcome very warm cooling water without an additional strategy.

Used-buying questions

Ask whether the unit was stored wet, whether wort ever dried inside it, and what fittings are included. Price adapters and hose hardware separately. Completed sales often reveal that brand-name plate chillers retain value only when clean and complete.

A practical inspection checklist

  • Confirm capacity, dimensions, model number and included parts.
  • Photograph labels, plugs, fittings, valves and sealing surfaces.
  • Price missing or questionable components before buying.
  • Compare delivered cost against completed sales.
  • Replace unknown tubing, worn seals and damaged food-contact parts.
